SP4.2.12 The impact of COVID 19 on colorectal cancer diagnosis and surgical oncological provision; A national perspective

Abstract Introduction The COVID-19 pandemic has interfered with many aspects of cancer management, including delayed diagnoses, stalled screening programmes, limiting treatment and clinical trials. Colorectal is the second commonest cause death in Ireland. objective current study to assess impact this on colorectal diagnoses surgery, at a national level. Methods Data endoscopy, emergency elective operations nationally Ireland over three year period (2018-2020) were obtained from National Quality Assurance Improvement System. relating surgery only included patient demographics, type (open/laparoscopic), length stay (LOS), mortality, admission critical care re-admission rates collected analysed. Results 31.33% less cancers have been diagnosed between March November 2020 inclusive when compared same past two years 22% rectal identified. There 34% reduction surgeries 42% initial wave during March-May concern, trend continued. Laparoscopic right hemicolectomies reduced by 41%, anterior resections 51% no change number temporary ileostomies period. Conclusion profound. concerning may result increased late or incurable stage disease as consequence presentation diagnosis.
